FARMINGDALE, N.Y., Feb. 25, 2025 – Bountiful resources and events within the Writing Center go unnoticed as students may not be fully aware of what this department has to offer. When students at Farmingdale State College have issues with an upcoming paper or are having difficulties in writing, the Writing Center is a free resource that many would use to help solve the issue. While the Writing Center is known for its professionals and tutors who assist the students in writing assignments, many enlightening qualities of the department are not being taken advantage of.

On thorough observation of the Writing Center’s page on the FSC website, it has been known that it offers public speaking tutoring through online and in-person consultations. As there are many fundamental aspects of delivering a speech that students tend to only learn through failure and correction, the center provides a place to foster those skills to improve the student’s capabilities for real-world integration.

Regarding speech capabilities, the Writing Center also provides ELL (English-language learner) tutoring for those who are studying English as a second language or need minor adjusting for academic proficiency. This gives those who aren’t native to the United States a chance to succeed through understanding the English language and assistance in the writing-intensive academics within this institution.

There is an event that is sponsored by the Writing Center, referred to as the Writers’ Café. It is held weekly on Thursdays for enrolled students to join peer writing tutors for “helpful refreshers on successful papers.”. It goes beyond that description with the incorporation of entertainment, art, food, and music; it's not just business, but also fun and creative.

On the Writing Center’s Instagram social media page, there is an artistic piece by one of the tutors that was created from the prompt “Describe your writing process.”. As numerous eyes veer in different directions, one possible message that could be interpreted from it is that looking through different perspectives is incorporated into peer writing tutor Tino’s writing process. This shows that there is a distinct aspect of writing that is being explored through the creativity in the Writers’ Café, which is being fostered in a calm and relaxing environment in comparison to one-on-one tutorage.

In addition, there are other events endorsed by the Writing Center that are hosted by different departments. Recently on the Writing Center’s Instagram page, they collaborated with the Multicultural Committee to present an Open Mic Poetry Slam with the theme of love for Valentine’s Day. The possibilities for events that incorporate writing, yet provide a form of creativity and entertainment, can be quite extensive when considering the other departments within the college.

Beyond the pen, a good idiomatic expression that symbolizes the depth of what the Writing Center has to offer the students. Beyond the writing-intensive papers and projects, the center offers tutoring in delivering speeches and helping students who have difficulty with the English language. Beyond professional counseling and tutoring, some events are meant to explore creativity within writing in an environment that promotes it.

Beyond what is known, there is more than what meets the eye with the Farmingdale State College Writing Center. For those interested, the Writing Center is located at Greenley Hall in room 318, go visit to inquire about upcoming events and additional resources to help with academic prosperity.
