ELMONT, N.Y. - The NHL Stanley Cup playoff race is heating up, and the New York Islanders find themselves in the middle of a dogfight for the final wildcard standing in the highly competitive Metropolitan division within the Eastern Conference. With only a few games remaining and the regular season concluding for the Islanders on April 14, playing well down the final stretch will be crucial for the team’s playoff hopes. Despite recent poor play of the Islanders, fans remain optimistic about the team’s chances if they can hold on and clinch a position in the playoffs.
This year’s Metropolitan division features a tightly contested group of teams battling for a playoff spot. The Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Washington Capitals all find themselves separated by a few points and are each within striking distance of third place with only a handful of games left to play. With these four teams competing for one slot and only a week to go, the Islanders recent losses could prove to be detrimental to their chances.
On Friday, April 3, at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY, Islander fans in attendance for the home game verses the Flyers shared their feelings on the team’s current playoff push heading into the matchup and upcoming postseason. Brandon Lamando, a young fan from Westchester Pa, believes his favorite team will secure third place in the Metro. “It’s tight in the conference, it’s tight in the division, I think we got it,” said Lamando. Longtime fan, Joe Pedone, from Wantagh, N.Y., also shared a similar sense of optimism and remains encouraged by the team’s chances moving forward. “We need some help, but I have a lot of hope,” said Pedone. Although many questions surrounding the playoff picture remain to be answered, the Islanders faithful fanbase continues to show up and support the team, mirroring the feelings of Lamando and Pedone throughout the arena from puck drop to the final buzzer.
In what was considered a must-win game for both teams, the Philadelphia Flyers left UBS arena victorious on Friday night with a dominant 4-1 victory over the Islanders in a tough visiting environment. The win for the flyers brought the team to within one point of the Islanders for third place in the standings, further complicating the playoff race. The defeat for the Islanders means playing well for the remainder of the season will be mandatory for them clinch a playoff birth in the Metro division.
The Islanders continue to face immense pressure as the regular season concludes. Recent shortcomings, including a loss to the Hurricanes on the road on Saturday, April 4th, leaving the team with little room for error. With upcoming matchups against the Toronto Maples Leaf’s, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadians, and Carolina Hurricanes, Islander fans are left with a cautious sense of optimism that their team can secure their place in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
