FARMINGDALE, NY - According to the admissions office at Farmingdale State College, there are 8,650 students currently attending the college. Of those 8,650 students, only 6.9% live in one of the three dorms the college has on campus. Those being Orchard Hall, Alumni Hall, and the newly renovated Dewey Hall. One might find that many students on campus don’t know much about what it is like to dorm at the college. So, with that understanding in mind, various students who dorm at FSC were asked to rate their experiences with dorming and to explain said ratings. This was done in order to provide insights into what life is like dorming at FSC.

Kacay Ramkisson, a Residential Assistant at the dormitories, had this to say when it came to her rating of her dorming experience, “Out of five I would rate it a three, because cold water is very frequent, there’s always cold water”. Here she makes mention of a facilities issue that she’s faced while dorming.

Echoing a similar sentiment, Thomas Rivardo, a junior who has lived in the dorms since 2022, also rated his dorming experience a “three”. He elaborated on his ranking saying, “I love my room, I love my people. I hate the food. I hate the toilet clogging so damn much.”

Andrew Mindes, a senior who has lived in the dorms since 2021, had this to say, “I would have to rate the dorms a 4.0 out of 5. I would give it a little of a higher rating, but I am not the biggest fan of the security and the administration of the building.” Despite frustrations with administration and the security presence in the dorms, Mindes is still able to find enjoyment in the dorming experience, saying “but everyone else in the building is cool and it’s pretty clean.”

Ray Howard is another junior who has lived in the dorms since 2022. He expressed displeasure when asked about his experience at the dormitories, rating his time dorming a “2 out of 5”. He offered the following explanation, “Air conditioning doesn’t really work that well and the staff here is not that nice.”

Rambler Student Life beat reporter, Khefren Ramon is also a Farmingdale student who dorms. He’s currently a second semester senior who has lived in the dorms since 2021. While he did not give a rating, he had this to say on the matter of his dorming experience, “I’ve had some really good moments, some really great moments I’ll always remember and some not so good moments. But, I think that’s just life. At the end of the day, I say it’s what you make of it”.
