FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Logan Penalvert is a senior at Farmingdale State College who is heavily involved in intramural sports. He plays a variety that alternates throughout the semester with his friends to fulfill his enjoyment of athletics. Intramurals take place at Nold Hall Athletic Complex and are open to all students.

Playing intramural sports has allowed Logan to meet new people and become more connected to the Farmingdale culture. He emphasizes, “I have met a lot of new people, and every time I see them throughout school, I always say hi to them” (said L. Penalvert, personal communication, March 11, 2026). Intramurals help students become more active at Farmingdale by competing against and connecting towards their peers and community, as revealed on Farmingdale's Campus Recreation website.

Logan is currently playing basketball intramurals. Each sport has a designated time allocated for it each week as posted on Farmingdale State College Campus Recreation. Logan describes the basketball schedule as flexible each week. He states, “We play once a week, but this week we’re playing two because of the snow days” (said L. Penalvert, personal communication, March 11, 2026).

Logan is part of a fraternity, and this encouraged him to start playing. Intramural sports have permitted Logan to build strong relationships with his teammates. Logan mentions, “I am in a fraternity, and all my fraternity brothers play, so our relationship is strong. And the other teams, I see them, I know some of them from classes. I have worked with some of them. So, with them, they are my good friends, and I like playing against them. It is a good friendly competition” (said L. Penalvert, personal communication, March 11, 2026).

Intramurals are accessible to both commuter and residential students. Logan is a commuter student and participates in intramural sports each week. He notes, “I believe it is 5050. I was going to say that it is good for commuters and dormers because they have a little bit for everybody” (said L. Penalvert, personal communication, March 11, 2026). FSC provides students with a range of sports that motivate them to join.

Each intramural sport is significantly different from the others, basketball primarily. Logan describes basketball as “Basketball is different because compared to football, football is kind of a one-on-one kind of deal. It is the quarterback, and if he gets you the ball, if you get open, basketball requires all five players to communicate, trust each other, and move around. It is all about more communication compared to all the other sports” (said L. Penalvert, personal communication, March 11, 2026). Logan believes communication is essential in playing basketball and helps players connect on the court.

Farmingdale State College intramural sports as of spring 2026 include badminton, basketball, European handball, flag football, home run derby, soccer, and volleyball as posted on Farmingdale State College Campus Recreation. Logan feels that FSC should add more. He expresses, “If there were to be one, I said a kickball league. I think it would be fun” (said L. Penalvert, personal communication, March 11, 2026). If you feel that adding more intramurals at FSC would benefit students, please contact campus recreation.
