Mineola, N.Y. - A revitalization project in Mineola approved by Gov. Kathy Hochul will allow live theatre to be brought back to the town after 46 years. This is a huge step in rebuilding downtown Mineola and restoring local arts in the community.

The original Mineola Theatre opened in 1926 and was a pinnacle to the community. Household names such as Henry Fonda and Robert Ryan performed there, and productions like Peter Pan and West Side Story were staged. The theatre was torn down in 1980, leaving a hole in the community. For over four decades, the community has not had dedicated space for live theatre, performances, and concerts.

Although extended redevelopment plans are still in the works, Mezzo Theatrical Company has big plans for bringing back live theatre to Mineola. They have established a new home inside of the First Presbyterian Church of Mineola, located at 182 First St.  The company, led by husband-and-wife duo John and Katherine Mezzo, will bring its production of Almost, Maine, which is scheduled to open on May 1. In my interview with John Mezzo, he explained the importance of theatre in local communities, and how honored he is to contribute to the town’s arts.  “The town hasn’t had live theatre since there was an actual theatre in the 70’s. So, we’re excited to have the arts here to add to the culture and the revitalization,” John said.

As opening night for Almost, Maine gets closer, excitement continues to grow. This production is more than just another performance for Mezzo Theatrical Company; it is the start of bringing back live theatre to Mineola. The return of live theatre is also predicted to have a larger impact on the community of Mineola, outside of the performances. Local productions can bring more people to the area which helps local businesses, restaurants, and other establishments in the area. Small productions like Almost, Maine also create opportunities for local actors, directors, and musicians to get involved right in their own backyard and build their own artistic identities.

For longtime residents of Mineola, the return of live theatre is particularly special. Many still remember when the Mineola Theatre was such a large part of the community and miss the days where they could indulge in the arts in their own town. Bringing back live theatre to Mineola not only honors our history, but brings a new, exciting generation of art. With support from residents, community leaders and local businesses, productions like Almost, Maine could guide Mineola to being a place where the arts can flourish once again.
