Gas prices continue to rise on Long Island despite successful increase in U.S. oil production

NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y- Gas prices has risen across Long Island despite U.S. oil production being as strong and successful as it is. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the United States remains the world largest crude oil producer with amounts exceeding over 13 million barrels per day over the last few years. So this raises the question if the U.S.  oil production is doing so well why are Long Islanders paying the price?

Locals at the Massapequa BP gas station weighed in on the current gas price crisis issue. One local says “ I feel I have no choice but to pay the current gas prices right now because I need to use gas in order to get to work and also it’s a big part of my job”.

Another local female had this to say when asked how she felt about the recent increase in gas prices, she says “I am a college student and also I need gas to get to work and school, its affected my ability to spend on things I need such as food and other important items.”

When asked if she had any tips for other Long Islanders looking to save during this current gas surge she says, “I recommend carpooling and utilizing public transportation.” Carpooling (sharing rides with others) can be an effective way to cut down on gas mileage and prices. It is also an effective way to save time especially for Long Islanders who prefer to use the Long Island Expressway as their preferred route by allowing them access into the H.O.V. lane.

Another question recent surges in gas prices have brought up is the question of who actually benefits when gas prices spike? The truth is it all comes down to a result of global pricing. When prices go up globally U.S. oil producers are usually left with no option then to raise their prices in order to be able to keep up with their global competitors.

Regardless if U.S. oil producers keep their prices low they still have to have enough funds in order to refill their products. With the global market oil prices being as high as they are our U.S. oil producer have no other option then to raise their prices hence the rise in prices we are currently seeing now.

All is not doomed, U.S. energy secretary, Chris Wright says that gas prices below $3 a gallon could happen later this year. This leaves us with the final question until then what should we do now? Until gas prices return to their natural under $3 a gallon price Long Islanders should take advantage of any carpooling opportunities and are also urged to consider public transportation as well as cutting down on unnecessary or unessential spending/shopping to help keep up with the current gas surge phenomenon.
