PATCHOGUE, N.Y.—The newest location of The Barn opened in Patchogue earlier this week, bringing life back to the spot that once housed the Long Island staple Dairy Barn. Despite the cold and rainy weather, cars continued to pull into the drive-thru to try it out.
Dairy Barns were spread out across Long Island for decades, offering milk, eggs, and other essentials in a drive-thru model. But competition and changing shopping habits pushed some locations out of business. Irena Angeliades took notice of this and bought some of the former stores, later transforming them into The Barn, a modern drive-thru concept.
I visited the Patchogue location on Monday for their grand opening to see how the transformation turned out. The Barn, in partnership with For Five Coffee, sells specialty lattes, plain coffee, dirty sodas, iced teas, lemonades, and seasonal treats. They currently have a new seasonal menu featuring 15 holiday drinks including the Christmas Wreath Donut Latte and the Mistletoe Matcha.
Prices range from about $8 for the average drinks to $12 for specialty ones. The trending 52oz. Jumbo Peppermint Coffee Bucket costs $19.95. Despite the big crowd, the drive-thru had friendly employees who were producing drinks in an average of 5 minutes.
Customers seemed excited to share their thoughts. Stefan rated the Smores Hot Chocolate a 7.5/8 out of 10. ‘It’s pretty cool,” he said. “They have a lot more than just coffee which is nice for someone like me who doesn’t drink coffee, and it’s got a really cool vibe to it.”
Friends Sydney and Sofia who got the Strawberry Sweet Cream Latte and Spiced Maple Cold Foam Chai, rated their drinks an 8 out of 10. When asked if The Barn is worth the hype, Sofia said “based off this drink, yea.” Additionally, another customer, Julia, got the Dr. Tropic dirty soda, rating it a 9.7 out of 10, and added that she would absolutely come back to The Barn with her friends.
The branding of The Barn leans into nostalgia which was intentional. Owner Angeliades and her family were frequent Dairy Barn customers. She knew it was important to keep iconic elements such as the eye-catching red exterior, the silo, and availability of dairy and convenience items. That decision resonated with customers like Adriana who ordered the Blue Lagoon dirty soda, rating it a 10 out of 10, and said The Barn “brings back childhood memories.”
The Barn in Patchogue drew in positive early reviews and the long, consistent line of cars suggested that locals are ready to welcome this new chapter of a Long Island staple. More locations of The Barn can be found in Huntington and East Northport, with more on their way before the end of the year in Center Moriches and Ronkonkoma.
