FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Gaming Club at Farmingdale State College gives students a relaxed place to unwind with tabletop role-playing games, board games, and card games. The Gaming Club was created by a small group of students who had an interest in gaming and were looking for a place to come together where they could share and foster that passion. It has become a community that brings students together from all different backgrounds, who have a commonality of gaming. At a recent meeting, the game of choice was Dungeons and Dragons. The game needs good teamwork, quick thinking, and creativity when played.
Students that are looking for this type of venue can go to Ram Central to find more information about the Gaming Club. The club is located in Quintyne Hall Room 109. The club demonstrates the idea that no matter how much you know or how little you may know about any specific game, they are open to having anybody join. Each week the club has their own game master who runs the weekly meetings for the game that is being played that week. In total the meetings are meant to be an open space for students interested in any type of game to play.
Parker, a student that belongs to the Gaming Club expressed that the club can be in use for casual play as well as competitive play. He stated “You come, you play whatever it is you want, card games, video games. As for competitive play, typically someone's always in there playing Smash, Mario Party or Mario Kart. When asked what he would tell anyone who is hesitant about joining the club, he responded with, “Just do it!”
You may be thinking that gaming would not be considered a school club. But if you look on the Farmingdale website under getting involved, it is listed as a club. Playing video games has been considered a harmful activity for students, but with its broad appeal, card games and also non - digital games like Beyblade are able to balance the playing field out so it is not just video game playing at these events. Students are happy to see that they can come together to enjoy a board game like Dungeons and Dragons in a positive environment.
Whether you are into classic card games like Uno or very high intensity video games like Super Smash Bros, the Gaming Club offers a welcoming space where you can feel relaxed, meet new people, and share your interests with others who also enjoy the games as much as you do.
