FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Social media is a part of everyone’s lives, no matter how old you are or your gender. It all doesn’t matter, since everyone has social media in the back of their pocket. But we aren’t going to talk about regular people, instead it's all about Farmingdale Students.

Students already have a difficult time finding parking, getting to class on time, assignments being due a certain time, so does social media give them that breath of relief. So, which is it? Is social media a good or a bad thing for students to use? Can it be a way to help students achieve what they want or damage their college years?

The first interview that took place was on OCTOBER 20th at exactly 3:05pm. I spoke to the psychology professor named Dave Broker about the role of social media, especially with FSC’s social media. Dave describes social media as a way to connect with peers, including classmates and friends.

When asked if he believed social media should be used in a classroom setting, especially for a project, his response was something remarkable. He states that, ‘It depends on everything where really its the purpose of it. The one class that I teach, I have everyone make a Linkedin account and suggest that they can follow their professors and their classmates.’ He believes that it works well if you are using social media to a professional network.

The next interview took place on OCTOBER 23rd at 1:14pm. The interview was about the thoughts of Damion Caracciolo, a student who is a psychology major. Damion states that he does use social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, also uses them for a few hours.

When asked about social media in a classroom setting, he stated that, ‘If that is the field you’re going into, like communications or a psych major, yeah, because that’s how a lot of people talk, and we need to study that. But if someone, someone in like a stem or like statistics class just randomly pulls out TikTok, that might not be so helpful.’

Lastly, this interview was with Victoria Gibney, a Farmingdale student who majors in STS. This interview took place on OCTOBER 23rd 1:21pm. Victoria views social media as a double edged sword, initially positive but also negative. She responds with a way to connect with people globally when asked about social media.

She too follows Farmingdale on social media, and also checks the club's schedule for future events. For a classroom setting, she believes social media should not be used in the classroom unless for a specific project. Victoria states ‘Like, I understand that sometimes it can be used for a project, and I know with some leeway, but if it’s not used for class purposes or educational purpose, then maybe it should stay out of the classroom.’

Overall, the interviews reveal that social media plays a complicated but powerful role in the lives of Farmingdale students. While it offers clear benefits such as staying informed about campus events, building professional networks, and connecting with peers it can also become a source of distraction, anxiety, and emotional strain if not used carefully.
