Suffolk County, N.Y.- As the weather gets better and temperatures rise throughout Suffolk County, outdoor eateries are making a strong return, bringing crowds of eager guests to enjoy food and drinks.

At Sayville Falls Beer Garden, the seasonal opening solidifies the beginning of the busiest time of the year.  Picnic tables filled with guests, gathered around the outdoor bar, enjoying the social atmosphere that has grown in popularity in recent years.

Outdoor eateries saw major growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions were placed, forcing restaurants to adapt. According to the National Restaurant Association, many customers have kept the preference of open-air dining even after limitations were lifted.

Reports within the industry,  have found that outdoor dining continues to be a lasting trend, with eateries continuing to invest in outdoor spaces as demand stays high.Customers at Sayville Falls say the appeal goes much further than just food.

For a lot of guests, the experience is just as essential as the menu itself. The calm setting, open-air environment, and social atmosphere create a space where people can spend more time with each other without the formality of traditional eateries.

Managers say the seasonal reopening is essential for business, as spring and summer propel the main seasonal revenue. They note that a strong kickoff in the early months typically sets up the tone for steady traffic throughout the duration of the season.  The return of outdoor dining also ties back to more general lifestyle trends, where people continue to prioritize experiences, social relationships, and new adaptable ways to spend their free time.

On top of supporting local businesses, outdoor eateries add to community activity by creating spots for residents and visitors alike to gather. These spaces serve as informal meeting points where families and friends connect in a shared environment.

For students at nearby colleges like Farmingdale State College, places like Sayville Falls have also become a first choice for economical social outings. Whether meeting a couple of friends after school or planning a casual date night, outdoor dining offers a balance of cost and enjoyable experience that aligns with student lifestyles, without the costliness typically associated with nightlife and traditional restaurants.

Events, live performances, and extended hours of operations are expected to bring in even larger crowds in the upcoming weeks as the season moves forward.

For many in Suffolk County, outdoor dining is not just seen as a seasonal activity- it has become a defining part of the local lifestyle.
