Farmingdale, N.Y- While some college fraternities are known for hazing their pledges Farmingdale has a different approach. Farmingdale brings support and a community.
“We don't treat our pledges that way,” said Vincent Meo, pledge educator for Kappa Sigma. “That's not what brotherhood is about. You shouldn't have to go through something dangerous or uncomfortable to be part of our fraternity.”
Unlike larger universities where hazing can be a big problem, At Farmingdale fraternities the goal is to have a welcoming environment. Vincent Meo talks about how the new member process really focuses on creating strong bonds and making sure potential members feel comfortable.
“We start by showing what our brotherhood is all about,” Meo said. “We want new members to see how we support each other. We do lots of events so they can get to know us and decide if they want to join.”
Joining a fraternity at farmingdale can offer a lot of benefits beyond social events. Meo explains that members build friendships, professional connections and gain leadership skills.
“It helps with networking, personal growth, and getting involved in campus life all without hazing,” he said. “We focus on positive experiences like community service and mentorship. Many alumni stay involved and help new members even after they graduate.”
Farmingdale State College has a very strict anti-hazing policy to make sure their students stay protected. The Fraterinites must follow these rules set by the school and their national organizations.
“New members are treated with respect through training programs, open communications, and regulator check-ins,” Meo said “If any group breaks the rules, they face serious consequences like suspension or removal from campus.”
According to the National Study of Student Hazing, about 55% of college students in teams or clubs and organizations experienced some sort of hazing. Farmingdale works hard to make sure to prevent this by being honest and transparent with the incoming members.
Farmingdale focuses on building character and preparing students for life after college. Many brothers take leadership roles within organizations. It gives skills that are valuable in future careers. The support within fraternities also gives brothers academic encouragement and career advice from alumni.
A lot of people think that all fraternities haze, but Meo wants to change that perception. He believes Greek life can be a positive experience if done the right way. "That stereotype just isn’t true," he said. "At Farmingdale, there’s no pressure to act a certain way or do something you’re uncomfortable with just to fit in. We want everyone to feel welcome."
Framingdale focuses on leadership, friendship, and personal growth, and fraternity life offers a supportive environment for members. By promoting ethical values and respect , these fraternities are changing the way people view Greek Life. Framingdale continues to strengthen its anti hazing policies, the school gets to stand as an example of how Greek life can be both safe and meaningful.
