FARMINGDALE, NY- I had the opportunity to play the First Word Challenge with the men's lacrosse head coach, Coach Chamberlain. He was on a tight schedule, about to hop on the bus to face SUNY Purchase- a game that would help push the RAMs’ record to an impressive 13-2. Despite the rush, Coach Chamberlain made time for a quick and fun interview, showing a lively and enthusiastic side.

This interview showed me a different side of Coach Chamberlain. From an outside perspective, he may come across as tough and serious. However, after speaking with him before and after the interview, it became clear that he is also funny, enthusiastic, kind, and cares deeply about his job and players.

Coach Chamberlain took over as FSC head men’s lacrosse coach in September 2014. Since then, he has led the RAMs to the Skyline Conference playoffs in each eight seasons and holds an impressive 107-47 career record. Under his strong leadership, 53 Rams have earned All-Conference honors, with two receiving All-Region recognition and one achieving All-American status. Through both his coaching and leadership roles, it is clear that his passion for lacrosse and helping athletes grow on and off the field is unmatched. He has been an amazing role model for these young players.

This interview took place at Nold Complex, where the team gathers before practices and games. Coach Chamberlain participated in a fast pace word association game, where he had to say the first word that came to mind after hearing a series of words related to the lacrosse season.

When asked about “team bus rides,” he responded quickly with “dynamic.” For “preseason,” he immediately said “long,” when asked about “overtime” he shouted “exhilarating.” When I said the word “locker room,” he described it as “the best.” For the phrase “rivalry game,” he said “energetic,” and for “home crowd,” he repeated the phrase, “the best.” Lastly, when asked about “practice drills,” he gave the fun and unique answer, “lunchbox.”

The First Word Challenge was a great way to show a different and more personal side of Coach Chamberlain. With his quick and thoughtful answers it was clear he brings the energy, passion, and pride to the program. His success on the field is known, but it’s his character off the field that truly makes an impact on his players at Farmingdale State College. I am grateful for the chance to share a glimpse of the person behind the title. A coach who leads with both heart and humor.
