FARMINGDALE, N.Y – Sigma Delta Tau hosted its “Soak a Sig” fundraiser event outside of the Campus Center at Farmingdale State College to raise money for the philanthropies they work closely with. Students had the opportunity to stop by and throw water balloons or whipped cream pies at members of the sorority. To participate, students could pay two dollars per balloon, 10 dollars per bucket, three dollars per pie, or five dollars for two pies.

This event was a part of Greek Week, where all sororities and fraternities host various interactive events for students to learn more about the causes they support, learn about Farmingdale State College’s Greek life, and help raise money during the fall and spring semesters. Sigma Delta Tau specifically works closely with Prevent Child Abuse America, Jewish Women International, and the Sigma Delta Tau Foundation.

Sigma Delta Tau’s main mission is to raise money and support three philanthropies through fundraisers and charity work.  Prevent Child Abuse America is an organization that helps prevent child abuse and neglect before it actually happens. They help families by providing a support system and helpful resources. Their main goal is to help make sure that children are able to grow up in a safe and stable home environment.

Jewish Women International is a nonprofit organization that helps protect women and girls from violence. Their main mission is to prevent domestic and sexual abuse by providing programs to educate women on what safe relationships and healthy environments look like. The Sigma Delta Tau Foundation provides scholarships to students and works hard to support the sorority’s philanthropy work.

Events like “Soak a Sig” are a great way for Farmingdale State College students to learn more about Greek life and the causes they support in a fun, interactive way. The water balloons and whipped cream pies were a great way to make students stop and want to interact instead of just walking past the table. Events like this are not only enjoyable, but they also educate students more about philanthropies that Sigma Delta Tau supports, while raising money. They show that Greek Week is much more than just a social event.

The event was held right outside the Campus Center, where many students consistently pass by, making it hard to miss walking to and from class on a busy afternoon. This allowed Sigma Delta Tau to catch students’ attention and teach them more about the causes they support. “Soak a Sig” is one of the many events that are taking place on campus during Greek Week. These events show how Farmingdale State College’s sororities and fraternities can raise money and awareness for meaningful causes right on campus.
