FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Nexus Center for Applied Learning and Career Development at Farmingdale State College organizes workshops and events centered around helping students prepare for the future.
As students face an increasingly competitive job market due to rising expectations from employers, many students at Farmingdale are turning to Nexus Center services to help build a strong and professional resume all whilst honing their career development skills.
Earlier this month, the Nexus Center hosted a resume writing workshop for students. The workshop was designed to ensure students have a better understanding of what employers are looking for in both resumes and the workplace. The workshop also provided students with physical resume templates. The templates handed out gave students a clear idea of what formatting is best for resume writing.
Nexus Center Director Cheryl Stratigos delivered a presentation going over various resume writing strategies and tips, including which format is best for students to incorporate as well as core skills. Stratigos also mentioned what not to include and answered questions students had regarding resumes, jobs and applied learning.
“I think the main point to get across is that students have access. We can see where you are and get you up to speed, put together a resume that shows relevant skills and experience,” said Cheryl Stratigos, director of the Nexus Center.
Stratigos highlighted the sheer importance of using Farmingdale resources like the Nexus Center as well the role of feedback when creating materials like a resume. In addition to workshops and events, students are suggested to take advantage of a variety of different resources when developing a resume. This may include asking different faculty members or even peers.
Senior public relations specialist Zachary Licht spoke about the role of AI in resume development and within the current job market.
“I would say it helps to an extent,” Licht said. “AI is not 100% accurate where many people might think that is the case. Come to the Nexus Center to have your resume reviewed, asking your peers, faculty and other staff members. Reviewing and getting a few extra pairs of eyes on it is recommended.”
The Nexus Center is dedicated to continuing to provide students with a plethora of different career services and events. This includes a job fair dated April 30. More information about the job fair can be found on the Nexus Center’s webpage, including an employer directory for students to look through.
As students prepare to enter the workforce, many are hitting roadblocks in the current competitive job market. The Nexus Center is determined to give students the skills to work around the current challenges. Effective resume writing is more important now than ever.
