Uptick trend of drunk drivers in Farmingdale New York
Derek Puma
On the night of Feb 10th, a man was accused of driving while intoxicated and crashing onto the LIRR tracks. When the police arrived, the alleged man's car was up in flames on the tracks. Police were able to put out the blaze just before 3 am, although this caused delays for the train station.
On Dec 27th, 2025. A Farmingdale man was charged with a DUI after critically injuring a driver in Melville. This was a head on collision that happened just around 10pm. The driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
In just the past three months there have been two notable car accidents involving intoxication, and the rest of the data also supports an upscale trend in other DUI arrests and charges. In the state of New York, about 30% of all accidents are alcohol related. In the country where Farmingdale resides, that number sees a jump to 41% of all accidents. In Nassau alone in the last year, the county saw traffic fatalities jump to 78 people confirmed dead compared to 68 the year before. There can be many reasons for the upscale numbers of drunk driving in Nassau County and the town of Farmingdale.
Farmingdale is known as a place for popular nightlife in Nassau County, specifically Main Street. This is a strip with many popular bars that attract people from the Long Island area. What's also right near Main Street is a train station (LIRR). This is the train station of the Ronkonkoma branch, which can make it convenient for people from New York City and other parts of Long Island to commute and have a night out in Farmingdale.
At the start of 2026, the MTA implemented fare for the LIRR in Farmingdale, causing one way and other ticket types to increase by 8%. From parts of east Long Island, the price for a two way ticket can be around the price of $26 depending on the time. An added fee of anywhere from $2 to $8 can also be added if you purchase a ticket on board or by the Train Time app. Many riders were unhappy with the fair increase, claiming an improvement in service was not even noticed.
Because of the number of locals who commonly commute by train to go out to the bars in Farmingdale, the increase in price of the LIRR may or may not be aiding the upscale number of DUIs related accidents in Farmingdale. Other reasons may include the relatively small area of the town compared to the number of people who usually go out drinking in one spot, and how many people usually leave the bar around the same time as the bars legally must close at 4 am. Another reason could be how the uber prices can surge to almost double the price at these late hours.
