FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —Packed basements, familiar faces and loud music. For many students at Farmingdale State College, fraternity parties are more than just a weekend party, It's a staple of campus life.
At a Kappa Sigma fratermnty party students opened up about what keeps them coming back and how these events shape their college experience.
“I have a great time every time I come out here,” said Richie Robbins, a frequent attendee. “It’s really fun. I like it.”
Fraternity parties like these are often known for their wild reputation, but many students described them as welcoming and have good relations. “Usually I come with a couple of my boys from Long Island,” Robbins said, “but I meet a lot of people here, too.”
These parties offer a mix of familiar faces and new connections giving students a whole new place to get to know people and socialize and to feel a part of the Farmingdale scene.
Ty, another party attendee shared his most memorable experience. “Probably my birthday party,” he said. “There were a bunch of good-looking girls, a bunch of my friends, and we had a really good night.”
I asked whether he’d recommend the parties to freshman or new students on campus, Ty didn't hesitate. “Of course. We’re all nice people here. We all get along. Don’t be afraid to say hi.”
Beyond the fun, these parties make a growing influence on campus. “I think we have a pretty big presence,” said Justin Dom, who spoke about the role fraternities play in student life. “I think so — 100 percent.”
While college party culture can sometimes carry negative stereotypes, the students interviewed pointed to a more inclusive and laid back chill vibe. With a mix of music and good memories and space to connect, these parties give a real purpose, building community among students going through the pressures of college.
As Farmingdale continues to grow, the role of fraternities and the social sphere they create is a key part of Campus culture.
Whether it's a first time guest or birthday celebration, these gatherings aren't just about the party. They're about belonging and finding your people. College can be hard to navigate and can feel overwhelming. Going to a fraternity party can really relieve this pressure and expand your experience on and off campus.
